In the spring of 2020, I was commissioned by the RSC Conservatory to write a string quartet to be performed by the Meadowlark Trio (who also performed my piece, Thievery, in the spring of 2019). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Gwydir Forest is set to be professionally recorded at the end of August, and not performed as part of a concert.
The piece itself is inspired by the ancient forests of Wales. 'Gwydir Forest' is reminiscent of Olde English and Welsh folk music. This is evident in how the piece is set to different modes rather than different scales.
The piece opens with a fast, quick paced melody that develops into a slow, 'chant like' part in the middle. The piece closes with an exciting, 'fast and furious' ending. ;)
